Review 2023
ibug Festival in pictures
Dear visitors
The Festival for Urban Art ibug – short for “Industriebrachenumgestaltung” – celebrated its 18th birthday in 2023 on the site of the old Reichsbahnausbesserungswerk in Leipzig-Engelsdorf. We popped the corks and buckets of paint on three consecutive weekends!
We are always delighted with the many positive reactions and nice comments from visitors during the festival. Curious people and history and art lovers alike visited this year’s ibug site during opening times. During the separate school and education week, school classes from the region were able to discover art for themselves and take part in workshops.
We were also overwhelmed by the number of visitors – almost 20,000 – which shows us that all the effort is worthwhile. Next time it will be smaller again, we promise!
Thank you very much!
Once again this year, we would like to say a very special thank you to the many people who helped us transform the huge industrial area into a wonderful exhibition space. We are very proud of what we were able to achieve together with you in 2023 – despite all the circumstances. That’s why we applaud all our supporters – it’s great to realize utopias with you!
We are also very grateful for the great works created by our artists on the ibug site:

Virtual tour
Note: To start the tour, simply click on the image and off you go! You can zoom with the scroll wheel. All pictures show you information when you click on them.
As a thank you, there is also a virtual tour for 2023. This allows you to roam ibug 2023 again and view all the works. You can find additional information, images and videos for all the artworks created by clicking on them. Our suggestion: it’s best to do this together with your friends who unfortunately couldn’t be there last summer. We would like to thank CURA 3D for the excellent cooperation once again.
Have fun and hopefully see you soon at ibug 2024!
History of the RAW-Engelsdorf
The Reichsbahn repair shop in Engelsdorf was built from 1903 onwards as a result of the planned construction of Leipzig Central Station and the associated relocation of many ancillary facilities to clear construction sites. For many decades, it served under various state railway companies for the repair of steam locomotives, passenger, and freight cars.
During the Nazi era, the plant operated permanently because the Reichsbahn represented strategically important infrastructure, which was also used for deportations. Forced laborers, including from France, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Russia, were forced to work on the machines. During the Second World War, the area was heavily hit by air raids, and the restoration, especially in the early post-war years, could only be carried out under the most adverse conditions.
Numerous buildings still existing today date back to the reconstruction period immediately after the war or the rebuilding in the early 1950s. During this time, the plant was also given the name „Einheit“ (Unity), which it bore until the early 1990s. After the end of the steam locomotive era, a new field of work was added with the construction of freight cars for several years. For several decades, mainly covered freight cars and tank cars were produced for the East German Reichsbahn.
With the reunification of Germany in 1990 and the railway reform in 1994, the plant gradually lost its importance and was on the verge of closure several times. Today, services for wagon maintenance are still offered by a private railway company in a part of the site, but large parts are unused or leased to third parties.

We would also like to thank our incredibly dedicated photographer friends. We are eternally grateful for your tireless work and the beautiful results you have given us over the years. In particular, we would like to thank Susan Fankhänel, Jan Thau, Martin Langhof and Matthias Wolf , whose photographs have impressed us time and again and who have captured the beauty and diversity of our events in a very special way. We are grateful and proud of your work and to have you as fellow campaigners.
